Amatuer RadioIn the summer of 1999 I went on a motorcycle trip around the USA by myself and decided to get a ham radio to take along for emergency use.
Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS)The uses for a portable radio such as the Kenwood TH-D7A that I bought include, in addition to voice, packet communications including a built-in implementation of the APRS software.
Packet RadioMy original intention for the radio I bought was to use packet/internet gateways to send and receive email and to get weather information via low-bandwidth web sites while I was on the road. Things didn't work out as smoothly as envisioned, but here are a few links that may be useful for someone doing remote packet radio.
I have devised a TCL script to reduce the packet station listings offered by the North American Digital Systems Directory to a reasonably short format suitable for low bandwidth transfer. If you are using a mobile station, particularly one with the kinds of limitations imposed by handhelds using PDAs as terminals, then you may find these listings useful. I'll try to keep them up to date and if I have the time I'll make their 'foot print' even smaller.
